Tips And Ideas For An Indoor Vegetable Garden

You can prepare the containers the same way as you would prepare for an outdoor garden, with the proper soil mix, plenty of drainage, and so on. However, these pots are likely to be smaller, and being indoors in the winter, they may not have as much moisture as needed to create perfect growing conditions.

A better option is to place your pots in large trays, sitting on a layer of small stones with water in the trays. This helps the growing plants to access water as they need it, and increase the humidity, creating ideal growing conditions.

You will need less fertilizer than when growing plants outside, because the vegetables will grow more slowly inside the house. There is also a reduced range of vegetable plants you can grow with your indoor vegetable garden, than with an outdoor container garden. You can still grow radishes, small peppers and tomatoes, some lettuce varieties, and many types of herbs.

Apart from growing the common herbs like sage, basil and thyme, you can also grow parsley, chives and cilantro. The advantage of herbs is that they will grow in six-inch pots on a windowsill, so they do not need to take up space inside your home.
