The green material can be grass from your lawn, nettles, soft green prunings from plants, manure from herbivores, raw vegetables from the kitchen, tea bags and coffee grounds. All of these materials are nitrogen rich, and decay faster.
The brown material includes cardboard such as cereal boxes, egg cartons, shredded paper waste, hedge clippings, old bedding plants, sawdust and wood shavings. These materials are rich in carbon, and rot more slowly.
These items should not be included, say the people in the Organic Garden, like meat, fish, cooked foods, faeces from your pets, and disposable diapers.
Create compost in your container by mixing green and brown materials together in equal volumes, with some twigs and bits of scrunched up cardboard to create air spaces and allow drainage of liquid materials.
