Why Is Compost Needed For Vegetable Gardening?

Why is compost needed for vegetable gardening? This is a question a lot of people ask. They see a bag of chemical fertilizer and think that is all you need for the garden. Chemical fertilizer can poison your garden soil if too much is added. In one year you may have a fantastic garden, then nothing grows for the next few years.

Compost allows you to add natural nutrients to the soil and to help keep the water in the soil. If you have clay soil, or the soil is too sandy, then compost will help make a more nutritious soil for your plants to thrive.

You can get advice on the best method to create your own compost by asking staff at the garden nursery where you can buy your compost bin. They can advise on the best plants you can add from your garden, uneaten food from your meal table. You will find a lot of the food that is not eaten on your meal table can be placed on the compost bin to feed your garden.

Using your compost bin to provide natural fertilizer to feed your plants in your garden and pots will help stimulate your plants and receive all the nutrients they require.

These are some of the reasons why compost is needed for vegetable gardening.

Organic Vegetable Gardening For Your Fresh Fruit And Vegetables

Organic vegetable gardening is becoming rather popular, especially as people want to eat freshly picked produce, rather than the tasteless fruit you get from the grocery store. You may not realize all the delicious flavor of fruit and vegetables, until you have tried freshly picked fruit from your garden.

If you want to avoid chemical pesticides and herbicides, then organic vegetable gardening may be your solution. If all these chemicals kill weeds and insects, then you can imagine what they do to your overall state of health if you eat fruit and vegetables from plants treated with chemicals.

Flower Seeds in Container Gardens

Flower seeds in a container can grow to become huge plants. Almost everything in nature begins from a seed. However, waiting for that tiny seed to take root and make a plant can make a gardener frustrated.

Flower seeds, however, can be started in various ways that will ensure they grow to become bountiful plants that produce many blooms to be enjoyed by everyone.

Flower seeds can be grown almost anywhere, but they will produce the best flowers when started indoors in some form of container. As long as they have the right soil, enough water, and plenty of light these infants will mature into beautiful and bountiful adult plants that have beauty surpassed by nothing that nature has to offer.

Window Bird Feeders To Invite Birds To Your Yard

Window bird feeders can be placed near tinted windows so that you can watch the birds feed on the seed in the feeders, without frightening the birds with your presence.

If you like birds flying around your yard, watching them feed on the seed in feeders, then window bird feeders may be ideal. You can even place hummingbird feeders and watch the hummingbirds come towards your window to feed. Seeing those little birds with their little wings. I could watch them all day.

Your yard can be become an invitation for birds and animals to wander around. You can see the birds flying to your window bird feeders and the squirrels head to your squirrel feeders. It will look so cool to see them all moving around your yard, locating the food you give to them.

You and your family can watch them all from your tinted windows. I have found watching the birds far more relaxing then watching mindless television. One of my neighbors saw my feeders and she has asked me about installing bird feeders in her backyard.

I told her where to get the various feeders and helped her install them around the yard. I put the hummingbird feeders near the trees, to attract the hummingbirds living nearby.

But she loves to relax and watch the birds feeding from her window bird feeders.

Backyard Fences For The Privacy And Security Of Your Family Home

Backyard fences are useful when you want to define the boundary of your property with your neighbors. This should be done with professional advice to confirm the boundaries of your yard, prior to the installation of the fence to avoid legal consequences and neighborhood disputes.

I used a property surveyor to confirm my boundaries before I arranged for the installation of backyard fences on my property.

There are many reasons for backyard fences surrounding your property. You want privacy and security. Your home is your castle. You do not want every Tom, Nick, Harry and their dog walking all over your property.

I recently had a problem of my dog disappearing into the neighbourhood. There no fence. After advice from my vet, I have decided to install an underground pet fence and my pet has never disappeared again.

The underground pet fence is not a hideous ten metre high above ground fence. You set a boundary within the yard with wires underground and this is the underground fence. Your pet wears a collar. If your pet is close to the boundary, it will hear beeps, if it step on the boundary it will either get a mild electric shock or a spray of Citronella, depending on your settings.

Both of these methods are considered humane and will not harm your pet. For confirmation if an underground pet fence is the best solution for your pet, contact your local vet.

Now, I can keep my pet dog on my side of the backyard fences.

Potting Table Is The Workbench For Your Garden

Potting table is one of the most useful tools to maintain your garden. It is the workbench of the gardener. Usually kept in the garden shed or the garage worskhop.

On a potting table, you can have all your tools laid out. Prepare your seeds and seedlings for planting, have any natural fertilizers like blood and bone, ready to apply to the soil.

You would work on your potting table, when it is raining or too dark to be in the garden. When you want to avoid the heat in the middle of summer, you can continue to work for your garden, in the coolness of your garden shed, pottering around on your potting table.

You can visit your local nursery or garden supplies store and ask for a potting table made to your specifications, to meet all your gardening needs. You may want to include the shelves below the table and an upper shelf as part of the main design.

Asphalt Paving For Your Driveway

Asphalt paving is an appealing option when looking to arrange for the installation of a new driveway or replace your current driveway.

You may have a concrete driveway and have noticed a few cracks and looks like its almost worn out. So what do you do? Replace with another concrete driveway?

A lot of people are now taking the long term option of an asphalt driveway. You can consider the long term use of a family with the number of cars increasing as the children grow older and start driving their own cars.

Some people have an asphalt driveway starting from the gate all the way up to the garage, and the garage may be towards the back of the house. This is usually for security reasons. They like to make it as difficult as possible for someone to steal their car.

If the car is left in the front of the driveway, it makes it easy for thieves to steal your car. If you park the car out the back in the garage, then it makes the car less visible and more difficult to steal.

Too much of a hassle for thieves to walk up to the garage and be seen walking up the asphalt paving.

Grow Lights Simulate Sunlight

Grow lights simulate sunlight and are placed on plants to help them grow indoors. If you have some seedlings and you want them to keep growing, even though it is dark, cloudy and raining outside, you can place grow lights and the seedlings will continue to grow.

You may like to move your flower pots into the house when it is cold and raining, but you can help your plants to continue to grow with grow lights.

You can place grow lights on tomato plants and will help stimulate your plants when you grow your tomatoes indoors or in a greenhouse. I grow some of my tomato plants in a greenhouse and I have recently started to use grow lights when the sun has disappeared behind dark clouds.

There was one time, when I did not know much about grow lights, not until recently. I saw them on display at the nursery and I bought a couple of grow lights to try them out.

Backyard Barbecue With All Your Friends And Family

Backyard barbecue is a popular option for social events. You want to invite your neighbours, your workmates, your friends and relatives. To be together in one place.

You may want to show everyone your new in ground solar swimming pool, and ask people to bring their swimming gear if they wish to have a swim in the pool.

You may have gained a promotion in your job and it is so much easier to invite your work colleagues to your home to celebrate your success with a backyard barbecue.

Keep the beer, soft drinks and juices cold and ready for all those who like a drink with their food. A few bottles of wine may please those who like wine. You want to please your guests, so if a guest asks for something to drink, then you should have it all available in a cold container.

The red wine is usually not put on ice, so you should have a couple of bottles of red wine available on the drinks table, to meet the needs of your guests.

Wire Topiary Frames To Create Your Landscape Centerpiece

Wire topiary frames are becoming quite popular, especially as centerpieces in the front or backyard. They are even used for special events like weddings, parties and other social occasions.

These days, it is easy to make a shape of an animal or a person or a chosen design using wire topiary frames and topiary plants. You do not have to be a full time sculptor, to create these wonderful shapes.

Many of us love the look of a manicured landscape adorned with artfully designed topiary plants. Years ago, you would have to be a skilled plant sculptor to achieve this look. Today, wire topiary frames provide a way to create a beautiful scene on your own.

I have recently created a couple of new shapes to look like active animals. These help keep birds from eating too much fruit from my fruit trees. I do not mind birds eating some of the fruit, but recently they came to my fruit trees and ate all of the fruit.

After I placed a number of animal shapes in wire topiary frames, the birds seem to come less often. As a result, I have more fresh fruit to feed my family and friends.

As you can see, wire topiary frames can be used in ways other than decoration.

Plant Stand For An Indoor Garden

Plant stand helps with keeping an indoor garden in your home. You can also use plant stands in the yard of your home, this helps when you have space restrictions and no room for a garden.

A plant stand helps you place your plants above the ground, so the plants are not overtaken by weeds or eaten by slugs, snails and other garden pests.

I now grow a lot of my flowering plants in pots in a number of plant stands around the house. They look so beautiful, just like the flower beds you get in a well landscaped property, except these flower beds are in a series of pots on a plant stand.

I have started to grow some of the small vegetable plants like pepper plant in large terra cotta pots placed on the plant stand. The large pots allows room for the pepper plant to grow and they seems very healthy and produce a lot of tasty peppers for my salads and meals.

Water Proof Cases And The Great Outdoors

Water proof cases are an essential item if you want to spend time in the great outdoors. There are times, when you are in the middle of nowhere and it starts to pour rain and everything gets wet.

Everything, except your essential items in your water proof cases.

Water proof cases can also be used around the home, to guard items against moisture and the weather elements. You may have some tools that are prone to rust, you can guard against moisture by placing your tools in a water proof case.

When we go camping, we find the best water proof cases have a separate lid that completely fits over the top of the lower half of the case.

This prevents leakage that is often present with the hinged containers we have tried. Through the years we have learned that rain showers can happen at anytime so we now pack our sleeping bags into the water proof cases whenever we leave the campsite.

Plant Nursery – To Grow Your Plants In A Controlled Environment

Plant nursery is where you can grow your garden plants in a controlled environment. You can control the amount of cold rain falling on the plants and avoid windy freezing conditions.

It may be freezing cold and pouring rain outside, but the garden plants are comfortable inside the plant nursery. You may even have some grow lights around some of the plants to help them grow in optimal conditions.

When I was a girl, gardens meant digging in the dirt and planting something. As the summer wore on, I could watch those plants grow. That is probably why everyone has a basic understanding of growing plants.

The advantage of a plant nursery is an all year round garden. You open the roof, if you wish the rain to come in, and close the roof, when the rain may flood the plants with too much water.

If it is windy outside, as long as all the doors and roof are closed, then the plants will be comfortable in their plant nursery.

You don’t need to put your backyard ideas into action immediately. They can be included over a period of time. You may have budget considerations, space limitations. Some of the current structures in your backyard may have to be removed and replaced with more useful structures.

Outdoor Fire Pit In Your Backyard

Outdoor fire pit is quite common in urban and country areas of the world. An outdoor fire pit can provide heat and light to the surrounding area.

An outdoor fire pit can bring fun and enjoyment on cold winter and summer nights. You can have a little party in your backyard, and everyone can sit around the outdoor fire pit and enjoy toasting a marshmellow or two on the fire.

Your guests can always try and walk on hot coals from one end to the other end of the outdoor fire pit. This is always a fun party trick. Just make sure your guests do not get burned and you have some first aid medications nearby to give a quick treatment for burns.

I always tell my guests of the risks of getting burns on your feet. I show them how I walk across and I do not get burned. I always show them my feet. Some guests take this as a challenge and try and get across without getting burned. Some succeed, others fail. Some put one foot in the outdoor fire pit and jump back out.

Lady Slipper Flower Is The State Flower Of Minnesota

Lady slipper flower is the state flower of our glorious state of Minnesota. It is a delicate white and pink flower and it grows mainly in shaded heavily wooded areas.

The lady slipper flower is a protected flower and is in danger of becoming extinct, due to the ever expanding urban sprawl, taking out wooded areas of our wilderness.

I live in the state of Minnesota. I was born and raised here and will most likely live out the rest of my life here. We have many extremes in our weather patterns.

We get as cold as 45 degrees below zero in the winter and as high as 110 degrees in the summer with a great deal of humidity. The unpredictable weather is part of the reason I love this state.

Metal window boxes can add decoration, style and colour to your home. You may have white walls or just plain bricks for walls, by adding a few metal window boxes you are adding a little colour and interest along a featureless wall.

I have seen metal window boxes on houses in our street. They stand out from the other houses and add that welcoming colour to the home. It says to the people walking past the house, that people live in this house, we love our home and we want it to make it look as good as possible by adding a variety of colours and decorating the wall with metal window boxes.

Gardening Gloves Are Worn As A Defence Against Dangers In The Garden

Gardening gloves are used all the time by gardeners to protect against dangers present in the garden. Dangers like weeds with thistles, insect bites, and any chemicals in the soil.

By wearing gardening gloves you help prevent skin rashes, skin infections or some types of poisoning. Gardening gloves are your first line of defence in the garden.

My sister is one of the most overcautious, overprepared people I have ever met. She won’t even step out into her garden without gardening gloves, a hat, extra sunscreen, overalls, heavy boots, and a host of other protective gear!

One day, I found a new weed in my garden. It had fine, hair like spines on it’s stem, but they looked so thin that I figured they would not do anything to me.

I didn’t bother to put on a gardening glove, but instead just grabbed for the thistle. At first, nothing happened. I pulled it out, threw it on the weed pile, and kept on working.

Soon, however, I started to notice an itchy feeling in my hand. I ignored it for a while, but it got worse and worse. When I looked at it, my hand was all swollen up. Whatever I had pulled out had stung me bad!

Lawn Swing In Your Front Yard To Enjoy The View

Lawn swing is quite popular to have on your front lawn, especially if you have a beautiful view from your front yard.

You may have had a stressful day at the office and rather than watching more stressful television, you can sit outside on the front lawn and enjoy the view from your lawn swing. You can chat to your neighbours, passers-by.

Once you realise how peaceful and quiet it is outside your home, you may decide to give your television away to a charitable institution, as you have no need for the useless drivel shown on television. You have more fun interacting with your neighbours from your lawn swing.

While you are enjoying your new freedom, you can take a look around your front yard and look at your neighbours front yards. Maybe you can get some ideas from garden magazines, the internet and your neighbours on how to make your front yard look better.

Gardening Tools To Maintain Your Garden

Gardening tools are the tools you use to maintain your garden. Basic gardening tools like hoses, spades, rakes, screwdrivers and hammers. I have found the rubber hammer is an indispensable tool when placing garden stakes for tomato plants.

A gardener is always in need of new gardening tools, and there are always new tools on the market that they may enjoy getting as a gift on any special occasion.

Gardening tools can range in price from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars. Since you probably aren’t going to buy something for a few thousand dollars, you might want to stick to the lower end of the totem pole.

Cherry Blossom Season in Japanese Culture

Cherry blossom trees are popular around the world. They seem to be most significant in Japan where they symbolise a kind of lifestyle and amount to a religious event, with popular celebrations and hope for the future.

The cherry blossom season in Japan is covered by a festival where crowds gather at parks all around the country to celebrate the event.

It is at the centre of the celebration of culture and religion in Japan, a period of renewal, during the cherry blossom season.

Fruit Trees To Pick Your Own Fresh Fruit

Fruit trees are quite popular to have in your backyard, especially the miniature fruit trees that don’t take too much room.

You can place your miniature fruit trees, next to a small herb and vegetable garden and you will have your supply of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for your meals and salads.

When you buy your fruits and vegetables from the fruit market, you don’t know how long they have been in storage, refrigerated, what chemicals have been added to the fruit to make them grow faster.

If you grow your own fresh fruit and vegetables, you can pick your fresh fruit and vegetables whenever you need them. If you don’t use any chemicals, then your fruit and vegetables are chemical free.

Bird Baths Add to the Beauty of the Back Yard

Bird baths are quite rare in suburban backyards these days. The bird baths can be quite expensive and require a little care to ensure no mosquitoes take up residence during the peak summer.

With a bird bath in the back yard, you can see the birds flying towards the edge of the bird bath and then splash in the water, they seem to be enjoying themselves. Especially in the summer heat, it helps them cool down and probably helps with their thirst.

The birds and the bird bath can help liven up a backyard.

There are many great things that can liven up the backyard, and some love to have things just to draw in birds. My mother has a large collection of bird feeders, and special feeders made just for hummingbirds.

She loves them, and they do tend to draw a larger number of birds to her yard so that she can enjoy them while they are there. She can sit in her windows for hours and watch them on some days, but she usually does not have the time.

One thing she talks about wanting is some new bird baths.
